Argireline
Acetyl Hexapeptide-8
Expression-line softening peptide
Argireline is a hexapeptide modelled on the N-terminal end of SNAP-25, a protein involved in neurotransmitter release at neuromuscular junctions. The peptide partially inhibits SNAP-25-mediated acetylcholine release, producing a mild, localised reduction in muscle contraction at the site of application.
Argireline is one of the more commonly mythologised cosmetic actives. It is sometimes described as “topical Botox,” which is misleading — Botox is a paralytic neurotoxin, Argireline is a small peptide with mild signalling effects. The honest assessment is that it provides modest visible benefits on expression lines (forehead, around the eyes) for some users, with a good safety profile.
We use it at 2% in the neck concentrate as one component of a peptide blend, not as a standalone hero. Combined with GHK-Cu and Matrixyl 3000, the peptide system addresses different mechanisms — Argireline for expression-line softening, GHK-Cu for tissue remodelling, Matrixyl for matrix synthesis.
The science
A 2002 *International Journal of Cosmetic Science* trial showed approximately 17% reduction in wrinkle depth around the eyes after 30 days of twice-daily application at 10% concentration. Subsequent independent research has been more mixed; some trials show modest effects, others show none. The mechanism is plausible at the molecular level but the in-vivo penetration through skin is the limiting factor.
